My husband picked up this piece when he stacked our firewood and remarked that it looked like a woman. I saw the other side which looked like the torso of a man! I was fascinated by the contrast between the smooth wood and the rough peeling bark. Going through relationship issues, it symbolised our human vulnerability to me. We are wounded and scarred underneath the surface.

Displaying the piece proved difficult and my husband and I worked together to shape the pole of the stand into the ‘moving forward’ position. It was also the first time I felt I needed to use paints to reveal the inherent drama.
