Like several other sculptures, Flight has gone through several stages - at first without wings. I found with greater sculpting confidence I needed to add the wings to make it fly properly. I was not prepared for the difficulties of balance versus material appeal and position of shape. I am much happier with the sculpture now as it glides through the air.

Driftwood, dwarf juniper from Ben More, melted refuse and pebble from Ardmair Bay

On a walk along the beach in Achiltibuie I found this amazing piece of melted plastic rubbish. It was shouting out to become a central part of something more important. I combined it with a piece of Scottish driftwood and a branch of a juniper tree which I had found on a walk up Ben More. The beautiful smooth and pristine white pebble from Ardmair bay contrasts wholeheartedly with the colourful jumble of shapes and textures of the jewel-like melted plastic.

This started out with the central stem which was so beautifully curved, it demanded to be contrasted with a straight beam holding the two ragged chunks of wood. Balance was achieved by cradling small white marble pebbles from Aberystwyth on both of them and mounting the sculpture on a smoothed driftwood shape stabilised by further pebbles.

Floating Scottish driftwood mounted on a rough timber base with rusty nails

The Dancer followed Kinetic 1 - Rattle. I loved the smooth quality of these branches and took great care not to destroy the swinging lines of the central post. A heather curve fitted beautifully in the post to hold the two driftwood sculptures which are competing in their beauty for the eye of the beholder. All the rounded shapes are balancing on the rough pallet block which was achieved by using a scaffolding curve behind the dancer.

The rattle was one of my first kinetic sculptures. It started out with a beautiful small curved branch which I extended and made circular, then enhanced with many materials I could find to resemble a children’s activity toy. It showcases the different textures and materials of the area and swings gently from side to side.
