Burnt plastic rubbish, beach finds, crab claws, shells, recycled fishing nets, driftwood, plywood Turning Back the Tide is the culmination of almost 20 years of collecting beach finds in Scotland. Almost 90% of the items are burned plastic rubbish! Locals collect rubbish at the beaches and burn it as a way of getting rid of it. The sea then washes the remnants back up and you have to look closely to realise that it is a catastrophy how much plastic is already in our environment. The sea and all the creatures in it are suffocating in it. We need to turn back the tide now! 2023 Approximate dimensions (cm) H66 W93 D13

Monarch

Caledonian driftwood, oyster shells, granite pebbles, metal washer I was inspired for monarch by the piece of wood which resembled an antler on a skull. It took a long time to match the second antler. Having seen traditional paintings of stags with leaves growing out of their antlers I decided to use oyster shells instead. I expressed my being critical of hunting for the purpose of shooting like a sport. Life on earth should never be extinguished for a sport. 2017 Approximate dimensions (cm) H72 W46 D57

Driftwood pierced by slate, with melted plastic, rusty nail and screw. I found this piece of blue foamy resin on the beach in 2013 and it immediately evoked the image of a big stormy wave. A rare driftwood find became the natural companion, the boat on the stormy sea. A sail shaped slate from a later excursion to Badenscallie in Scotland showed the strength of the storm and is blowing the boat home. Driftwood, sea glass and fishing rope and nets rescued from the shores of Coigach The early find of the long sharp needle shaped piece of driftwood inspired the thought of it being caught in a net. A further find of a smaller and similar piece led to the final idea of the two being caught in a net with kelp-like hanging ropes and a sea glass eye. Driftwood, knitted wire, fishing net and pebbles In this early piece, the quality of the branches encouraged me to join them together and to enhance the newly found spaces with wire and pebbles. The heart of the sculpture is the marble pebble in the shape of a heart from Ardmair Bay. It made me recall the story of the American Indians which was written in the book by Dee Brown which I loved. Some of the materials used are also closely resembling those ones Native Americans might have used for their dreamcatchers. Fishing rope and netting, driftwood, shells, slate, sea glass and fishing line

I found two semi-circular branches which reminded me of the rainbow we saw over our cottage when we went to Coigach for the first time. It was a life changing event and an overwhelming feeling of awe. I wanted to document this important moment in my life with this sculpture. The colour is provided by all the beach finds of fishing paraphernalia, which I carefully unknotted, straightened and which were washed by my husband. The central piece of wood has a magic smile and the four periwinkle shells represent my family. We have been so happy there. However, rainbows only exist where there is rain and this is represented by the sea glass and the slate drops from Devon.
